Iberdrola España will install three solar communities that will benefit 500 families in Galicia

The facilities will be located on the roofs of two sports centres, in A Coruña and Pontevedra, and a hostel in the town of Sarria, Lugo.

The initiative will prevent the emission of 1,923 tonnes of CO2 over 30 years and will reduce electricity bills around 40%.
Iberdrola España will install three solar communities in the municipalities of O Porriño (Pontevedra), Boiro (A Coruña) and Sarria (Lugo) that will enable 486 families to access self-consumption and reduce their bills without having to have their own infrastructure or make any type of investment. To be eligible for this option, interested parties must live within a radius of less than two kilometres from the roof where the photovoltaic panels are located and have an electricity contract with Iberdrola España. Once they are up and running, the three infrastructures will prevent the emission of 1,923 tonnes of CO2 over 30 years. It is estimated that the beneficiaries will get a reduction in their annual electricity bill of around 40% in all cases. The new equipment is a continuation of the first project of these characteristics that the electricity company commercialised in Galicia on the roof of a workshop in the Pontevedra town of Moaña at the beginning of the year.
The solar community planned in O Porriño will be located on the roof of the Gym Jovhen Sport gymnasium. A total of 190 panels with a power of 87.4 kWp will be installed; 15 kWp will be for the consumption of the sports centre, and 72.4 kWp will be used to cover the needs of 145 neighbours. The forecast is to produce 95,165 kWh of energy annually. With this operation, the company calculates that in 30 years it will prevent the emission of 525 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
On the other hand, the roofs of Hibrid Padel, in Boiro, will be used to carry out a project for which Iberdrola España plans to install 242 photovoltaic panels that will generate 144,851 kWh of energy per year – from which 207 residents will be able to benefit. They will have an installed power of 111.3 kWp, of which 8 kWp will be for the tracks and the rest for the families who request it. Furthermore, thanks to this infrastructure, 800 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be reduced in 30 years. This form of community self-consumption allows users to share 100% renewable energy from a facility located in the vicinity of their homes – helping to build a more sustainable world.
Pioneers o self-consumption
The last of the actions that the electricity company will implement so far in the Galician community will take place in Sarria, in the Alma del Camino hostel. A total of 134 residents will be able to access the offer, which will have 194 panels that will prevent 598 tonnes of CO2 in three decades. The panels will generate 89.2 kWp of power which will be divided between 22 for the owner of the hostel and 67.2 kWp for the neighbours who wish to benefit from this energy. In this case, this energy generated is estimated to be around 108,303 kWh.
In total, Iberdrola España will install 696 panels between the three infrastructures that will generate 348,319 kWh of renewable energy and prevent the emission of 70 tonnes of CO2 per year. Since 2015, Iberdrola España has been the first company in the sector to implement self-consumption solutions into an offer that improves efficiency and savings while accelerating the energy transition. For Iberdrola España's Sales Director in Galicia, Borja Cancela, "these projects are a very important milestone that reinforces Iberdrola España's commitment to innovation in energy solutions, sustainability and commitment to the areas where we are present – by making self-consumption and its economic benefits available to all residents without the need for them to make large investments".
Those interested in this modality will be able to calculate the economic and environmental savings and join the solar community through the Solar Communities website, by visiting one of the Iberdrola España service points or by calling freephone 900 92 33 33.
