For yet another year, Iberdrola España supports the Zangarun Solidarity of Zamora – 'Running with the Heart for Hugo'

  • The town of Ricobayo in Zamora was the setting for this charity event, which welcomed around 300 athletes from all over Castilla y León, as well as Galicia and Portugal and, of course, from the province of Zamora

  • The more than €3,000 raised by this collaboration will go entirely to the Asociación Corriendo con el Corazón por Hugo

The Zangarun Solidarity 2024 has returned this Sunday to the town of Ricobayo in Zamora, which has welcomed nearly 300 athletes and walkers who have once again supported this initiative which combines mountain athletics with the promotion of tourism in one of the most beautiful and emblematic places in the province.

This charity event, which received special support from Iberdrola España, the Muelas del Pan City Council, the Zamora Provincial Council and the Caja Rural de Zamora Foundation, raised around €3,000 for research into rare diseases.

The proceeds from this new edition of one of the sporting competitions that arouses the greatest interest among trail running enthusiasts have been donated in their entirety to the Asociación Corriendo con el Corazón por Hugo (Running with the Heart for Hugo Association).

The town of Ricobayo has become the setting for this sporting event, which has welcomed participants from all over Castilla y León, as well as Galicia and Portugal and, of course, from Zamora, which has once again supported the sport 'with more heart'. 

In addition, Iberdrola España wanted to highlight the solidarity background of this initiative and compliance with the SDGs integrated into its business strategy, focusing on goal number 3, contributing to improving the health and well-being of Zamorans through physical activity and sport.

Iberdrola España's delegate in Castilla y León, Miguel Calvo, reiterated "the company's commitment to the province of Zamora due to its deep ties with this region, where it was born more than 120 years ago, and from where it promotes the energy transition towards renewable and competitive energies that promote rural, sustainable and responsible development with the environment and society".

Iberdrola España, creating value for society

Iberdrola España wants to continue to keep its finger on the pulse and maintain contact with the province of Zamora and with all the parties involved, and to do so the Company is committed to retaining and attracting young talent. To this end, Iberdrola España is returning to its origins with a focus on the future, talent and innovation. The facilities that have housed Iberdrola España's Hydraulics Laboratory for decades – a world reference in the field of engineering next to the Ricobayo dam – have become a pioneering project. An iniciative with an innovation and training centre through which at least 800 future professionals from all corners of Spain will pass every year.

Looking to the future, Iberdrola España will continue to invest heavily in this region in order to continue offering its almost 130,000 customers in Zamora an increasingly better quality of service. To this end, it plans to invest €36 million in electricity networks in the province over the next four years, a further €40 million in the expansion of wind farms, €4.7 million in hydroelectric infrastructures over the last two years and a recurring fiscal contribution of more than €13 million euros a year in provincial taxes.

The company has 17 facilities in the province of Zamora with an installed capacity of 976 MW, four wind infrastructures and 13 hydroelectric plants, a clean and flexible energy that creates jobs and is committed to training professionals in a booming sector that offers jobs to young people. In addition, together with the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation, it trains young people from schools in Zamora on the risks of climate change.

The company also recently announced in the Zamora capital that it will invest in a pioneering large-scale aluminium recycling project of the LatemAluminium company, which will create 800 jobs, 300 of them direct, by 2026 in the provinces of León and Zamora.
