Iberdrola España and Panasef sign an agreement to facilitate decarbonisation and sustainability in the funeral sector

Panasef member companies that wish to do so will receive personalised advice on how to reduce their carbon footprint by implementing decarbonisation solutions

The energy company will also carry out a sustainability diagnosis of all funeral service facilities which will be published in the annual report "Radiography of the funeral sector"
Iberdrola España and the National Association of Funeral Services (Panasef) − an organisation that brings together around 70% of funeral services in Spain − have signed an agreement to promote the green transition in the funeral sector and help achieve the association's goal of achieving zero emissions by 2040.
This alliance reflects the determination of both entities to promote responsible practices, aligned with decarbonisation and the construction of a more eco-friendly economy.
Through this agreement, Iberdrola España undertakes to offer Panasef associates who request it a personalised study focused on the search for solutions that favour efficiency, energy savings and care for the environment, while placing the customer at the centre, providing them with greater connectivity and decision-making capacity.
These solutions are divided into Smart Mobility, as a comprehensive solution for electric vehicles (EV); Smart Solar, for photovoltaic self-consumption; Smart Services, with advisory services aimed at improving efficiency and energy savings; Smart Clima, for heating and cooling solutions and energy rehabilitation. In addition to 100% renewable energy supply with a guarantee of origin certificate (GdOs).
As part of the agreement, Iberdrola España will also carry out a sustainability diagnosis of all funeral service facilities that will be published in the annual report "Radiography of the funeral sector" in order to address the challenge of decarbonising its activities and lead the sector's ecological transition.
"The agreement is another example of Iberdrola España's commitment to accompany the service sector in the process towards decarbonisation, offering customised proposals to each of the companies in the funeral sector to address 100% renewable electrification in their activity and thus promote the progressive and complete decarbonisation of their activity by 2040," said Alfonso Calderón, Commercial Director of Iberdrola España.
The Secretary General of Panasef Alejandro Quinzán stated that "for us, this type of agreement is key as it will allow us to minimise our impact on the environment. We have been working along these lines for years. The funeral sector is committed to electric vehicles, the use of ecological coffins and photovoltaic panels is widespread, significant investments have been made so that cremation furnaces have a purification system... In short, we are committed to a sustainable sector".
Calculate to decarbonise
In its aim to achieve an economic system based on low emissions, Iberdrola España provides all companies with a free online carbon footprint calculator that prescribes solutions to save on energy bills and quantifies the emissions generated, a mandatory requirement from 2024.
This tool, designed by Iberdrola España, in addition to calculating the carbon footprint − a key indicator for measuring the degree of decarbonisation − immediately provides a personalised and detailed report on the economic and energy saving measures that each company can adopt based on its consumption and facilities. In this way, the company responds to the entire carbon footprint value chain: calculate, reduce and offset.
The report provided by the energy company also gives different data on the proposed measures such as the cost of the installation or service, the return on investment or the amount of emissions avoided by the implementation of the measure.
Iberdrola España’s calculator divides emissions into Scope 1, direct emissions produced by fuel combustion by the emitter; and Scope 2, indirect emissions generated by electricity consumed and purchased by the emitter.
The solutions proposed to reduce these emissions are focused on mobility, self-consumption, aerothermal energy, façade renovation, consumption control and the supply of different energy services, among others.
On the other hand, for those emissions that cannot be reduced, Iberdrola España, through Carbón 2 Nature, makes high-quality carbon credits available to companies based on natural projects that absorb CO2, foster a circular economy and promote sustainable development. In this way, the company responds to the entire carbon footprint value chain − calculate, reduce and offset.
