Iberdrola España promotes its first solar community in the province of Tarragona, in Valls

  • This installation will allow more than 70 local residents to cut back on their electricity bills by accessing renewable self-consumption without making any investment.
  • The set-up, which generates 100% sustainable energy, is on the roof of Termo-Watt Solar and will have 70 panels.

Iberdrola España has developed its first solar community in the province of Tarragona in Valls, which will allow local residents to benefit from the advantages of renewable self-consumption without the need for their own installation or investment.

This type of community self-consumption allows users within a radius of two kilometres to consume 100% renewable energy generated from a single photovoltaic installation by signing up to it and with guaranteed savings. In this case, the plant is on the roof of the Termo-Watt Solar warehouse and Iberdrola España is making the investment.

The installation consists of 70 panels with a total power of 38 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce 54 MWh annually, and will prevent the emission of around 298 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.

Some 77 residents of Valls will be able to participate in this solar community and save on their electricity bills by consuming part of the energy produced by this installation locally.

For Juan Miguel Bailón, Iberdrola España's Commercial Representative in Catalonia, this project "reflects Iberdrola España's commitment to Catalonia, with local, sustainable and innovative actions that allow us to offer the residents of Valls renewable and locally-produced energy for their homes".

José Luis Mira, owner of Termo-Watt Solar, highlighted the satisfaction of being part of this amazing project that will "generate clean energy for the municipality of Valls, working with Iberdrola España, which is a step closer to the energy transition".

In addition, as a result of its commitment to self-consumption, Iberdrola España has improved the remuneration of its customers' surpluses and, thanks to innovation in energy products, self-consumers with Iberdrola España plans are able to cash in their surpluses over the price per unit of energy.

Promotion of self-consumption

Iberdrola España leads the photovoltaic self-consumption market in Spain, managing 40% of the country's self-consumption customers. As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and developing new products to improve efficiency and energy savings, in 2015 the company became the first company in its industry to integrate self-consumption solutions into its service offering, with a roof of the consumer’s own or not.

Self-consumption solar systems can save 30% on annual bills in the case of owner’s associations; 50% for companies and businesses; and up to 70% in single-family homes. These savings come from three sources: the energy produced by the installation that the user does not have to buy, compensation for surplus energy not consumed, which is fed into the grid, and savings from lower taxes.
