Iberdrola España reaches 1,000 solar communities in Spain putting self-consumption within reach of 100 k families. In 2015, the company was a pioneer in offering self-consumption to its customers. Aware that more than two-thirds of the country lives in high-rises, in 2019, it launched its solar communities, a solution that gives any neighbour located within 2 km of an installation access to 100% renewable energy.

More than 3.5 M people in all Spanish provinces live within the radius of an Iberdrola España solar community, which are located on the roofs of buildings such as churches, schools, industrial warehouses, and shopping centres.

Iberdrola España's communities allow you to enjoy all the benefits of solar energy, without the need for photovoltaic panels on your own roofs, or for you to have to make any investment, since it’s the company that takes care of the installation and finding the best location.

Madrid stands out in first place among the locations with the highest number of Iberdrola España solar communities, with 170 installations, and is followed by the Valencian Community with 148. Extremadura, with more than 19 k families, is the region in which the most households can access self-consumption through this solar energy solution.

Cáceres in Extremadura was the first solar city in Spain, offering all its inhabitants the possibility of self-consumption without the need for their own infrastructure or investment. After Cáceres, Bilbao, Valladolid, Badajoz, Córdoba, Guadalajara and Huesca followed in the same footsteps.

The more than 1,000 solar communities commissioned by Iberdrola España allow savings of up to 30% on customers' electricity bills, a fact that adds to the benefit of reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Each solar community will prevent the emission of around 640 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years, improving air quality in the places where they are installed.

Leader in self-consumption in Spain

As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, Iberdrola España leads the self-consumption market in Spain. The company's customers can take advantage of the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity tariff during the hours when there’s no sun, when you need to consume energy from the grid, since during the day what it generates is enough.

Self-consumption solar systems can save up to 30% on annual bills in the case of apartment buildings, 50% for companies and businesses and up to 70% in single-family homes. These savings are produced in three ways: the energy produced by the installation that the user does not have to buy, compensation for the surplus energy not consumed that is fed into the grid, and savings due to lower taxes.

Iberdrola España allows energy that is not used to be fed back into the grid in exchange for compensation through its Solar Cloud service, or even diverted for consumption at another residence.
