The 12th Madrid Cancer Race, supported by Iberdrola España, has broken its own participation record, bringing together 27,000 people who turned the Paseo de la Castellana green in a day full of togetherness and hope.

Organised by the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC), the event has established itself as a landmark to support the fight against the disease and has for the 10th consecutive year been backed by Iberdrola España as its main sponsor.

This initiative, which is part of the agreement between the two organisations, seeks to promote prevention and awareness of the disease, as well as to raise funds for cancer research and to provide free support for people with cancer and their families.

Prominent personalities ran, including the Minister of Health, Mónica García, the ambassador of Iberdrola España and two-time Olympic champion, María Pérez, and the marathon runner and influencer, Verdeliss.

On Sunday, Paseo de la Castellana and Plaza de Colón became the epicentre of this charity initiative which started at 9:00 a.m., when the starting gun of the 10 km went off, and finished at 2:00 p.m. During the event, the attendees had a whole range of activities to enjoy, such as guided warm-ups, family entertainment and children's races. DJ Tony Aguilar made it a real party and Iberdrola España’s own Electric Band provided the finishing touch, filling Plaza de Colón with power and energy.

“For Iberdrola España it’s an honour to work, year after year, on a cause as important as the fight against cancer, although we know that much remains to be done, especially in the field of research”.

Elisa Yarte, Head of Brand, Media, Advertising and Sponsorships at Iberdrola España, said that ‘in the ten consecutive and wonderful races that we have supported, we have seen the things you can do when charity and the ability to overcome obstacles come together. For Iberdrola  España it’s an honour to work, year after year, on a cause as important as the fight against cancer, although we know that much remains to be done, especially in the field of research. Days like today, when so many similar human stories come together and our common strength is on display, show that together we are on the right path to defeat this disease’, she said.

Jaime Salaverri, president of the Spanish Cancer Association in Madrid, stressed that ‘the organisation's commitment is to continue funding research projects focused on low-survival tumours, also providing equity in research. At events such as this one, as well as making visible the support that the Association gives to people with cancer and their families, we encourage healthy lifestyle habits such as sport and, since tomorrow is World Colon Cancer Day, we are sending out a message of awareness, since early screening saves lives. If we all join together we can achieve our goal of exceeding the 70% cancer survival rate,’ he concluded.

The race coincided this year with the eve of World Colon Cancer Prevention Day, on 31 March. In 2024, more than 41,000 new cases of colon cancer were diagnosed in Spain, making it the tumour with the highest incidence in the country, although nine out of ten people can survive the disease with early detection.
