Iberdrola España and Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar develop four solar communities in Extremadura
- The installations, which generate 100% sustainable energy, will be located on the roofs of the group's mortuaries in Cáceres, Navalmoral de la Mata, Plasencia and Mérida.
- This infrastructure will allow more than 400 families to benefit from a 40% reduction in consumption and access to renewable self-consumption without making investments.
Iberdrola España and Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar will develop four solar communities in different locations in Extremadura: Cáceres, Navalmoral de la Mata, Plasencia and Mérida, which will allow more than 400 residents to reduce their consumption by up to 40% and have access to renewable self-consumption, without the need to have their own installation or make any kind of investment.
This form of community self-consumption allows users located nearby to access the 100% renewable energy generated from the roofs of the four Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar buildings, where a total of 630 panels will be installed with a combined power of around 300 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce around 415 MWh per year. These photovoltaic installations will prevent the emission of around 2,250 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.
Specifically, the installation in Cáceres (the San Pedro de Alcántara Funeral Home), which will contribute to promoting the first solar city in Spain, will have 264 panels with a power of 121 kWp, of which 36 kWp will be used for the funeral home's own consumption and 85 kWp for the 170 residents who can subscribe to the Solar Community. The La Inmaculada Funeral Parlour in Navalmoral de la Mata will have 115 panels with a power of 53 kWp that will supply the funeral parlour and up to 80 residents with clean energy.
The Plasencia Mortuary will have 100 panels with a power of 46 kWp and will serve 70 residents, while the Santa Eulalia Mortuary in Mérida, which will open its doors at the end of this year, will have more than 150 panels and a power of 70 kWp that will supply clean energy to around 100 residents and the funeral group's facilities.
Thanks to the four Solar Communities, more than 400 families within approximately two kilometres of one of the four locations will be able to subscribe and save on their electricity bills by consuming locally some of the renewable energy produced by this installation.
Users can calculate the economic and environmental savings and join the solar community through Iberdrola Spain's Solar Communities website, by visiting one of Iberdrola's service points or by calling the toll-free number 900 92 33 33.
Borja Cañas, Iberdrola's sales representative in Extremadura, emphasises that this project "allows us to continue advancing in the supply of zero-kilometre renewable energy, through an innovative solution that will help Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar and the families of Extremadura to promote sustainability while saving on their bills at the same time".
In the words of Fernando Yaybek, CEO of Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar, "Iniciativas Alcaesar has been developing the social commitment project "Un paso por la vida" for years. The initiative covers different areas: social action, participation in inclusive, cultural and sporting projects, and focuses on four main areas of interest: Employees, Customers, Society and the Environment.
"A step through life's priority objective is to participate in initiatives that aim to promote social development and give back to society the trust they place in Grupoia's funeral companies day after day," adds Yaybek. In the area of sustainability, the Grupoia has set itself the goal of achieving some of the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that the UN approved in 2015 in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
PIONEERING INITIATIVE
In its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and developing new products to improve energy efficiency and savings, in 2015 Iberdrola España became the first company in its sector to integrate self-consumption solutions into its range of services.
For its part, Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar will be the first company in the sector in Spain to implement this initiative, the result of the collaboration between the National Association of Funeral Services (Panasef) and Iberdrola España in the sector's decarbonisation project.
Iberdrola España has consolidated its position as the benchmark company in the sector with a 200% increase in its self-consumption portfolio by 2022. Through Smart Solar, the company offers services for all types of customers, from domestic consumers to large industrial customers.
