Innovation in our business in Spain

Innovation as a tool to push forward the energy transition in Spain

Iberdrola Spain is developing projects related to green hydrogen, innovative renewable energies, sustainable mobility, energy storage, smart grids, electrification of heat and recycling of clean technology components that will contribute to Spain’s industrial transformation, with a focus on sustainability, green and affordable energy and employment. These projects will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of the Spanish industrial fabric, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will improve urban environments and contribute to the demographic challenge.

The projects – aligned with the green and digital transition binomial established by the European Union – will enable green recovery in the short term and in the medium and long term the transformation of the country, orienting it towards the industries of the future. They will be led by agents with the capacity to break new ground and organise and will be developed collaboratively, involving SMEs and the business ecosystem and the links in the industrial value chain in all the autonomous communities of Spain.

Sustainable mobility projects in Spain

To support the transition to electric truck fleets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in road transport, Iberdrola España has launched the first public MCS charger for heavy duty vehicles in Southern Europe, in partnership with the Iberdrola | bp pulse joint venture.

Energy storage projects in Spain

Iberdrola España will install six new storage batteries with a total capacity of 150 MW in Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. Battery storage technology is key to maximising the use of clean energy.

Hydroelectric pumping projects in Spain

Iberdrola España, with a grant of €44.9 million from the Next GenerationEU Plan, will build the Alcántara II reversible hydroelectric pumping station. It will have a capacity of 440 MW and a storage capacity of 15 million kWh, enough for the daily consumption of 4 million people, and will stabilise the electricity system for up to 35 hours at full load.

Wind power repowering projects in Spain

Iberdrola Spain will repower four wind farms in the country, reducing almost 200 wind turbines and increasing energy production by 30%. This process involves replacing old turbines with more advanced and efficient models. This will generate more energy with less impact on the landscape, improving efficiency and sustainability in power generation.
