Extremadura is a pioneer with the first fully solar village (Cedillo) and the first solar city in Spain (Cáceres).
Around 15,000 families in Extremadura will benefit from self-consumption of energy thanks to the deployment of solar communities in the region by Iberdrola España – a system that has the advantage of not requiring investment or work in the home and which represents a significant saving on energy bills.
By the end of 2023, Iberdrola España signed agreements for carrying out 123 solar communities throughout the region, offering self-consumption to households within a radius of less than two kilometres from the place where the photovoltaic panels are located.
Specifically, the installed capacity of these solar communities exceeds 10 MWp, which allows them to generate more than 14 GWh of energy per year and avoid the emission of 84,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next 30 years with totally renewable and local energy.
New form of self-consumption
Iberdrola España's solar communities are based on collective self-consumption and consist of two key players. On the one hand, there is the owner of the roof, who offers his unused space to place solar panels and generate 100% renewable energy to help him save on his electricity bill. On the other hand, there are the neighbours, who must be within a radius of up to 2 km from the roof, who can self-consume clean, local energy without any type of investment, installation or permanence through a subscription model, similar to any digital platform – thanks to the energy surplus of the roof's owner.
In the province of Badajoz, the main towns with the highest number of solar communities are Don Benito, Badajoz, Almendralejo, Villanueva de la Serena and Mérida.
Likewise, Plasencia, Cáceres, Miajadas, Navalmoral de la Mata and Coria make up the bulk of the towns with the most facilities of this type in the province of Cáceres.
In addition, Iberdrola España has a large number of solar communities throughout the region, which means that anyone interested in joining this self-consumption system can do so by joining the solar community closest to their home via the Iberdrola Solar Communities website, by visiting one of the Iberdrola España service points or by calling the free telephone number +34 900 92 33 33.
Iberdrola España's solar communities allow savings from the first bill and a 40% reduction in electricity consumption once the installation is up and running. Another advantage of this type of self-consumption model is that the energy is completely renewable and "local", as it must always be within a radius of less than two kilometres from the point of generation.
Pioneers in Extremadura
In Extremadura, Cáceres is the first solar city in the country to offer all its inhabitants the possibility of accessing energy self-consumption; and Cedillo has the first solar community in Spain for an entire village. This initiative was recognised last December as the "best European sustainability initiative" at SolarPower Europe's Solar Sustainability Award 2023.
In the case of the solar community promoted by Iberdrola España in Cedillo, the jury highlighted its status as a "visionary project" for setting up a self-consumption solar community in a village of 400 inhabitants, "which all residents can join and benefit from savings of up to 50% on their bills". This community also received the Iberdrola Convive award.
