Iberdrola España holds a conference in Murcia on the challenges of decarbonising the economy

  • The Official College of Industrial Engineers of the Region of Murcia and Iberdrola España held the informative day as part of the Industry, Energy and Sustainability Forum

  • The Regional Minister for the Environment, Universities, Research and the Mar Menor, Juan María Vázquez; and the Director General for Energy, Industrial and Mining Activity, Federico Miralles, took part in the event

  • Companies such as SABIC, El Pozo Alimentación, Estrella de Levante; organisations such as AGRUPAL, ASTIC, A3E; and officials from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism also took part in the conference

The Association of Industrial Engineers of the Region of Murcia and Iberdrola España held the conference 'Challenges of Decarbonising the Economy' to discuss the different processes of carbon emissions reduction that companies are carrying out. Furthermore, during the conference, there was a debate on the existing regulatory environment – a key factor to evolve by gaining competitiveness, using local renewable energies and taking advantage of end-use technologies that are more efficient than fossil fuels.

The conference was attended by the Regional Minister for the Environment, Universities, Research and the Mar Menor of the Region of Murcia, Juan María Vázquez, and the Director General for Energy, Industrial and Mining Activity, Federico Miralles, who outlined the landscape on the sustainability and energy and industrial planning in the Region.

Concepción García Mulet, director of the technical office of the special commissioner for the PERTE for Industrial Decarbonisation of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, also took part and explained the PERTE current situation for Industrial Decarbonisation.

The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge was represented by Mar Blázquez, Deputy Assistant Director of Energy Efficiency, who explained how the Energy Saving Certificates (ESCerts) system works.

The Dean of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of the Region, Marcos Mateos, and the Institutional Delegate of Iberdrola España in Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cerdán, welcomed all the participants and thanked them for their collaboration in holding this conference.

For Marcos Mateos "it is important to disseminate new developments on decarbonisation and advantages of energy saving certificates, as they are a market that will revolutionise energy efficiency at an industrial level, for large and small companies".

Miguel Ángel Cerdán stressed that it is necessary to "increase investment in electricity grids so that industries can carry out their development and we all have to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the decarbonisation processes, which will generate new technologies, many business opportunities and create quality employment. We must industrialise the energy transition value chain in the Region of Murcia and take advantage of our local renewable energies to reduce dependence on third countries".

The conference included a round table in which companies from Murcia or with a presence in the Region, such as SABIC, El Pozo Alimentación or Estrella de Levante, highlighted the efforts they are making to carry out good practices for decarbonisation, which are already enabling them to reduce emissions. For instance, the upcoming projects to replace gas boilers with heat pumps or electric boilers with thermal storage, which are more energy efficient.

In terms of organisations, representatives of the Association of Energy Efficiency Companies (A3E), the Association of Food Industries of Murcia (AGRUPAL) and the Association of International Road Transport (ASTIC) also took part, presenting the different opportunities that currently exist to advance towards efficient decarbonisation, from an energy and economic point of view.

Boosting decarbonisation

More than 50 companies joined the Q-Zero Alliance, the project promoted by Iberdrola España for decarbonising the thermal demand in Spain.  The initiative, open to all actors, is a meeting point for dialogue to accelerate decarbonisation, especially of thermal energy demand in both the industrial and building sectors, and to combat climate change.

The alliance is conceived as a common place open to all actors where all entities come together, discuss the current situation, identify bottlenecks and develop proposals and activities to accelerate the electrification of heat in different sectors, maintaining competitiveness and contributing to realising energy transition opportunities.
