With support from Iberdrola España, the green tide against cancer returns to the streets of Murcia
- Iberdrola España supports the charity walk 'Murcia Walks against Cancer’ on Sunday 17 November for another year.
- Proceeds will go to the research being carried out by Alejandro Rodríguez at the BIO-HPC group at UCAM Catholic University of Murcia.
The Spanish Cancer Association in the Region of Murcia presented this morning at Murcia City Hall the 9th charity walk that will run through the capital’s downtown on 17 Sunday to raise funds for cancer research and which has the support of Iberdrola España.
The event was attended by Pilar Torres, Councillor for Social Welfare, Family and Health of the City Council of Murcia, Eduardo González, Vice-President of the Spanish Cancer Association in the Region, Miguel Ángel Cerdán, Institutional Representative of Iberdrola España in the Region of Murcia, and Alejandro Rodríguez, researcher at the BIO-HPC of the UCAM with a grant from the association.
‘Murcia Walks against Cancer 2024' will start at the Puente de Hierro, next to Ronda Garay, with a certified five-kilometre route. The 5K and 10K runners will start at the same time, running one and two laps respectively. Walkers will start later, doing just one lap.
Registration can be done at regiondemurciaenmarcha.com or at the tables that will be at the door of El Corte Inglés from 11 to 16 November from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Support from Iberdrola España
The initiative is supported by Iberdrola España as the main partner for the 9th consecutive edition and is part of the agreement between the two organisations to work on research to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment and on raising awareness in the fight against the disease.
Miguel Ángel Cerdán, Iberdrola España's Institutional Representative in the Region of Murcia, thanked the Association ‘for the opportunity to support “Murcia Walks against Cancer” for yet another year’ and stressed that the company and the Spanish Cancer Association have a long-standing relationship that was consolidated in 2015 with the signing of a collaboration agreement aimed at cancer research. The continued commitment of the company and its customers has made Iberdrola España the association’s main private collaborator.
Among the most innovative initiatives developed within the framework of this agreement is Together against Cancer, a project through which Iberdrola España offers its customers the possibility of collaborating with the association by matching their monthly donations through their electricity or gas bills.
Research grants
Alejandro Rodríguez is a pre-doctoral researcher in the Structural Bioinformatics and High Performance Computing Research Group (BIO-HPC) at the San Antonio de Murcia Catholic University (UCAM).
His research aims to find new anti-cancer agents, as current treatments are not sufficiently effective. Techniques based on computational chemistry have emerged in the last two decades that speed up the drug discovery process, making it faster and more affordable.
He develops and uses advanced computational techniques to discover new drugs to fight cancer more effectively. They focus on several types of cancer, such as colorectal, pancreatic and breast. They use artificial intelligence and other innovative computational technologies to identify new drugs. The most promising drugs identified by these techniques will be tested in the lab to assess their effectiveness and how much they improve cancer treatment.
