Iberdrola España develops its first solar community in Lleida in Balaguer

  • This installation will allow more than 220 local residents to cut back on their electricity bills with renewable self-consumption without making any type of investment.
  • The installation, which generates 100% sustainable energy, is located on the roof of Seimant and will have 200 panels

Iberdrola España has developed its first solar community in the province of Lleida in Balaguer, which will allow the residents of the area to benefit from the advantages of renewable self-consumption without the need for their own installation or investment.

This type of community self-consumption allows users located within a radius of two kilometres to consume 100% renewable energy generated from a single photovoltaic installation by signing up for it and to ensure guaranteed savings. In this case, the plant was located on the roof of the Seimant warehouse and Iberdrola España is making the investment.

The installation consists of 204 panels with a total power of 111 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce 154 MWh annually, and will prevent around 852 tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.

More than 220 residents of Balaguer will be able to participate in this solar community and save on their electricity bills by consuming part of the local energy produced by the installation.

For Juan Miguel Bailón, Iberdrola España's sales representative in Catalonia, this project "reflects the company's commitment in Catalonia to local, sustainable and innovative measures, which enable it to supply local energy to its customers".

Jordi Martinez Moreno, from Seimant, emphasised "the satisfaction of being part of this project with Iberdrola, which will make it possible to generate renewable electricity and make it available to local residents".

In addition, as a result of its commitment to self-consumption, Iberdrola España has improved the remuneration of its customers' surpluses and, thanks to innovation in energy products, self-consumers with Iberdrola España plans can sell their surpluses for more than the usual rate.

Promotion of self-consumption

Iberdrola España leads the photovoltaic self-consumption market in Spain, managing 40% of the country's self-consumption customers. Within the framework of its commitment to accelerate the energy transition and the development of new products to improve efficiency and energy savings, in 2015 the company became the first company in its industry to include self-consumption solutions in its range of services, on your own roof or not.

Self-consumption solar systems can lead to annual bill savings of 30% in the case of condos and apartment buildings, 50% for companies and businesses, and up to 70% in single-family homes. These savings are produced in three ways: the energy produced by the installation that the user does not have to buy, compensation for the surplus power they did not consume, which is fed into the grid, and savings from lower taxes.
