SEGURA RIVER BASIN: OUR HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATIONS

The Segura basin is home to eight Iberdrola España hydroelectric power plants that supply clean energy to almost 60,000 families a year

Iberdrola España has a presence in the Segura basin with three power plants and five mini-hydroelectric plants. Together, they have an installed capacity of around 85 MW, which means they are capable of supplying clean energy to more than 59,500 families a year. The facilities can be found in three autonomous communities in Spain.

The River Segura is born in the area of Fuente Segura, five kilometres from Pontón Bajo in the municipality of Santiago-Pontones in the province of Jaén, at an altitude of over 1,400 metres. In addition to Jaén, it runs through Albacete, Murcia and Alicante, until it flows into the Mediterranean, in the Alicante municipality of Guardamar del Segura, after a distance of 325 km. Its catchment area is 19,025 km2 and it is snow- and rainfed at the headwaters, but in most of its basin it is Mediterranean rainfed, with large autumn floods.

Segura reservoirs

The Segura basin has reservoirs that act as important regulators of the flow of the river: for flood control, as a form of water storage, and as hydroelectric power generators. Some of the reservoirs that form part of this basin are highlighted below.

Almadenes reservoir

Located in the municipality of Cieza, in Murcia, the Almadenes reservoir covers 6 hectares. Its construction was completed in 1925.

Anchuricas reservoir

The Anchuricas reservoir was built in 1957 and is located on the Segura riverbed in the municipality of Santiago-Pontones, in the province of Jaén. It has a capacity of 6 hm3 and covers 57 hectares.

La Novia or La Vieja reservoir

La Novia reservoir, also known as La Vieja, is located in the north-western part of the Segura river basin, in Jaén. The dam was built in 1955 and was built in concrete. The total surface area of the reservoir is 7 hectares

Hydroelectric power stations in the Segura basin

Iberdrola España's commitment to the promotion of renewable energies and the energy transition is reflected in our presence in the Segura basin with eight hydroelectric facilities. In addition to offering a clean, 100% renewable and affordable source of electricity, the construction, management and maintenance of all these infrastructures has a significant economic impact on the area: the creation of local jobs, the strengthening of infrastructure, and the promotion of sustainable development benefit the three autonomous communities in which we operate in this basin.

Miller hydroelectric power station

With an installed capacity of 25.67 MW, the Miller hydroelectric power plant is the largest of those that Iberdrola España has in the Segura river basin: with the energy it generates, this plant is capable of supplying almost 18,000 families a year. It is located in the municipality of Santiago de la Espada, in Jaén, making it the only one of our power stations on this river located in Andalusia. It was commissioned in 1957.

Almadenes hydroelectric power station

The Almadenes hydroelectric power station is the first that Iberdrola España commissioned in this basin in 1923. It has an installed capacity of 12.88 MW, which means that it has been benefiting more than 9,000 families a year for more than a century. It is located in the Murcian municipality of Cieza.

Cañaverosa hydroelectric power station

Also in Murcia, the Cañaverosa hydroelectric plant has an installed capacity of 3.59 MW, which benefits more than 2,500 families a year. It was commissioned in 1927 in the municipality of Calasparra.

Fontanar I, II and III mini-hydroelectric plants

The Fontanar complex consists of three mini-power plants of approximately 6 MW, 9.79 MW and 13.68 MW each. Together, they are capable of supplying the energy necessary to supply 20,650 families a year. They are located in Albacete, in the municipality of Liétor, and were all commissioned in the same year: 2005.

Fuensanta mini-hydroelectric power station

This mini-power station is located in the municipality of Yeste in La Mancha and has an installed capacity of 8.84 MW, which is capable of covering the energy needs of around 6,200 families a year. It has a 70-metre drop and was commissioned in 2008.

Hijar mini-hydroelectric power station

With an installed power of 4.80 MW, this mini-power station has been benefiting 3,360 families a year since it was commissioned in 1955. It is located in the municipality of Ayna, in Albacete, and has a 105-metre drop.
