Wind farms in La Rioja

Wind energy in La Rioja exceeds 300 MW of installed capacity, distributed among 12 wind farms

Wind energy arrived in La Rioja in the early 2000s. In February of that year, Iberdrola España inaugurated its first wind farm in the region – Yerga I.

La Rioja's commitment to renewable energy has been reflected in the implementation of policies and regulations that encourage investment in wind projects and the promotion of energy efficiency. Thus, in 2022, more than 50% of the electricity generated in the autonomous region will come from renewable sources

In addition to the efforts of the autonomous community to use clean energy, Iberdrola España is also working hard. The 12 wind farms that we have in La Rioja have an installed capacity of 312 MW – capable of generating electricity for thousands of homes annually.

Munilla La-Santa wind farm

The Munilla La-Santa wind farm is located between the Riojan municipalities of Hornillos, Munilla and Zarzosa. With an installed capacity of 36 MW, it has 18 wind turbines with a unitary power of 2,000 kW – some of the most powerful wind turbines in the region.

Larriba-Hornillos wind farm

The Larriba-Hornillos wind farm, with an installed capacity of 32 MW, consists of 16 wind turbines of 2,000 kW each, with a rotor diameter of 83 metres and a hub height of 67 metres. The facility is located in the municipalities of Ajamil, Hornillos and Munilla, in La Rioja.

Gatún I and Gatún II wind farms

The Gatún I (50 MW) and Gatún II (17 MW) wind farms, located in several municipalities in La Rioja such as Autol, Quel and Villaroya, have a total installed capacity of 67 MW. They are thus capable of supplying electricity to thousands of homes per year.

Igea-Cornago wind farm

Located in the Riojan municipality of Igea, the Igea-Cornago wind farm has an installed capacity of 28 MW. The energy generated by this wind farm is evacuated through the La Serna substation, located in Tudela, Navarra.

Préjano-Enciso wind farm

The Préjano-Enciso wind farm is located in the mountains between the Riojan municipalities of Enciso and Préjano. The facility is made up of 35 wind turbines of 850 kW of unitary power, thus achieving a total installed capacity of 29.8 MW.

Sierra Alcarama I and Sierra Alcarama II wind farms

The combined capacity of the Sierra Alcarama I (6.8 MW) and Sierra Alcarama II (45 MW) wind farms reaches an installed capacity of 51.8 MW. These facilities are located in Cervera del Rio Alhama, in La Rioja.

Escurrillo wind farm

Inaugurated in 2003, the Escurrillo wind farm, with an installed capacity of 49.5 MW, is located in the Sierra de la Hez, in the municipalities of Arnedillo, Bergasa, Bergasilla, Bajera, Herce and Ocón. Its commissioning required an investment of 42 million euros

Cabimonteros wind farm

The Cabimonteros wind farm, located in the town of Robles del Arnedillo, has 75 wind turbines of 660 kW of unitary power, reaching 49.5 MW of installed capacity.

Yerga I and Yerga II wind farms

The combined generating capacity of the Yerga I (24.4 MW) and Yerga II (30.6 MW) wind farms totals 55 MW of installed capacity, enabling them to supply electricity to thousands of families in the area. Both wind farms are located in the Yerga mountain range, between the municipalities of Alfaro and Autol.
