We surpass 130,000 self-consumption contracts and we reach 1,500 MW of installed capacity
- The energy company assumed a year-on-year growth of more than 200% of self-consumption installations to the grid by 2022.
- The company has been working for years on the transformation of electricity grids towards a smart, more reliable, resilient and secure infrastructure.
i-DE, the distributor of the Iberdrola group, has surpassed 130,000 self-consumption installations connected to the electricity grid after growing by more than 200% in 2022. Together they contribute more than 1,500 megawatts (MW) of green generation to the system, fully integrated into the low and medium voltage grids, which will prevent the emission of more than 500 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The distributor facilitates access to self-consumption for the domestic market, normally with capacities of less than 15kW, and for companies and industrial customers with installations with or without surpluses with capacities from 15kW to more than 100 kW.
In its quest to lead the energy transition towards a decarbonised economyExternal link, opens in new window. , the company has been working for years on the transformation of electricity grids towards a smart, more reliable, resilient and secure infrastructure, placing the customer at the centre of our activity.
"Grids are the real backbone of decarbonisation. Their transformation also results in a better quality of supply for our customers. That is why at i-DE we have been working for years to achieve a more robust, flexible and intelligent grid that allows us to manage the new usage models", says Monica Miyar, Customer Service Director at i-De, an Iberdrola distributor.
Along the same lines, the distributor supports local councils and end customers to facilitate and support the integration into the grid of technical and technological solutions that enable them to improve energy efficiency and contribute to the development of more sustainable cities.
support for self-consumption
Iberdrola has various measures in place to support and encourage self-consumption.External link, opens in new window. i-DE has been committed for years to digitalisation and innovation as levers to adapt the networks and their service and management channels to the new paradigm brought about by the arrival of renewable energy sources.
The company also organises talks, events and agreements with public administrations and professional associations to disseminate information on the i-DE grid connection process and the activation of the ATR (Third Party Access to the Grid) contract, a procedure that must be carried out between the distributor, the administration and the customer to legalise and connect a self-consumption installation.
With the same objective of providing information and empowering its customers, the electricity company provides them with different tools on its digital channels so that they can take control of their electricity consumption habits.
Thus, from the Customer Area on the website and via the app, self-consumers can view the amount of energy they demand from the grid (incoming energy) and the amount they feed into the grid (outgoing energy). In addition, there is a wide range of functionalities such as the free SMS and/or email notification system for breakdowns or scheduled work, which allows customers to have timely, first-hand information on incidents that may affect their supply point.
Pillar of the energy transition
i-DE is immersed in a process of digitalisation of the electricity distribution grid that will allow more information to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures, in a way that is committed to ambitious and urgent climate action. The deployment of the smart grid makes it possible to respond to new models of grid use and offer a better service to citizens.
i-DE manages more than 270,000 kilometres of power lines, a distance equivalent to circling the Earth almost seven times. It also has 98,000 transformation centres in service and 1,000 substations. In recent years, the company has undertaken an ambitious plan to digitalise its electricity grids, where it has converted its more than 11 million meters and the infrastructure that supports them into smart meters, incorporating remote management, supervision and automation capabilities.
SELF-CONSUMPTION REACHES MORE THAN 5,000 INSTALLATIONS IN NAVARRE
i-DE has reached 5,500 self-consumption installations connected to its electricity grid in Navarra, which have contributed to the system a total of 48 megawatts (MW) of green generation fully integrated into the low and medium voltage grids.
In Navarra, the company manages more than 8,200 km of low and medium voltage lines and more than 1,740 km of high and very high voltage lines. It also has 3,648 transformation centers in service and 87 substations. The company maintains a level of service quality in the Autonomous Community of Navarre that is above the national average, with the best value in history at the end of 2022.
I-DE CONNECTS MORE THAN 4700 SELF-CONSUMPTION INSTALLATIONS IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY.
In Euskadi, the company continues to increase self-consumption and, in this case, they have managed to make it grow thanks to the investments made in the area. The 4,700 self-consumption installations, which have contributed a total of 100 MW of green energy to the system, have already been integrated into Iberdrola's low and medium voltage networks in the region.
I-DE manages more than 18,600 km of low and medium voltage lines and more than 4,430 km of high and very high voltage lines in the region. It also has 11,916 transformation centers in service and 165 substations. The company maintains a level of service quality in the Basque Country that is above the national average, with the best value in history at year-end 2022.
MORE THAN 800 SELF-CONSUMPTION INSTALLATIONS IN THE LA RIOJA ELECTRICITY GRID
i-DE continues to work in La Rioja to increase the capacity of self-consumption installations. To this end, the main objective continues to be the digitization of the grid, which will allow even more renewable energy to be integrated and reach more homes. An important example of the company's commitment to sustainable development in Spain was that it has surpassed the figure of 800 self-consumption facilities connected to its electricity grid in La Rioja, which have contributed a total of almost 9 megawatts (MW) of green generation fully integrated into the low- and medium-voltage grids.
In La Rioja, i-DE manages more than 4,560 km of low and medium voltage lines and more than 590 km of high and very high voltage lines. It also has 2,542 transformation centers in service and 40 substations. The company maintains a level of service quality in the region that is above the national average, with the best year-end value in history.
