We are working with Gipuzkoa-based Multiverse on quantum computing solutions for the electricity grid
- The company joins forces with the start-up Multiverse Computing in a joint project, within the framework of the Gipuzkoa Quantum Programme of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, DFG-GFA.
- The objective is to find solutions for complex optimisation problems where a large number of different combinations need to be evaluated, such as finding optimal battery locations within the electricity grid.
- The 10-month project has the collaboration of BIC Gipuzkoa, Iberdrola España and Multiverse Computing, recognised as the most important company in quantum software programming in Europe.
Iberdrola España reaffirms its commitment to collaboration with start-ups in the search for technological solutions, within the innovation framework promoted by the Global Smart Grid Innovation Hub (GSGIH). Thus, the Basque company and the Gipuzkoan start-up Multiverse Computing have launched a joint quantum computing project, within the framework of the Gipuzkoa Quantum Programme of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.
Quantum computing is a promising technology for solving complex optimisation problems where a large number of different combinations need to be evaluated. To explore this new technology, i-DE, the distribution company of Iberdrola España, leader in smart grids, has chosen an optimisation problem that consists of selecting the optimal number, characteristics and locations for batteries installed in the electricity grid.
Electricity grids must integrate an increasing amount of renewable generation, electric vehicles and other distributed energy resources and, to this end, batteries will play an important role in providing flexibility to the electricity system. Therefore, the selection of their optimal locations is critical and, due to the number of variables and possible locations, of great computational complexity.
The Gipuzkoan start-up Multiverse Computing is recognised as the most relevant company in quantum software programming in Europe. The two companies will contribute their cutting-edge experience in their respective areas of expertise in a 10-month project.
In the words of Iker Urrutia, i-DE's Gipuzkoa Area Manager, "The Basque Country has become a benchmark in quantum computing, and Iberdrola España, committed to this land and to innovation, has located here the Iberdrola Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub, its international reference centre for the development of smart grid technologies. Iberdrola España's collaboration with Multiverse, a start-up from Gipuzkoa, is therefore a natural alliance that will keep Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country at the forefront of quantum innovation".
