Iberdrola España begins construction of Finca San Juan wind farm in Tenerife
- It will allow the archipelago to move towards energy autonomy without depending on third parties, with a guaranteed local energy supply without emissions.
- With an output of 17.3 MW, it will produce clean and renewable energy – equivalent to the consumption of around 16,000 homes. This will avoid the consumption of almost 5 Olympic-size swimming pools of diesel.
- When the wind farm is up and running, it will prevent the emission of 28,000 tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere.
Iberdrola España has begun the construction of the Finca San Juan wind farm, located in Arico, on the island of Tenerife. With a capacity of 17.3 MW, it will produce clean and renewable energy – equivalent to the consumption of around 16,000 homes, which is equivalent to the population of around La Orotava.
When the farm is up and running, its production will reach 56GWh/year, which will prevent 28,000 tonnes of C02 emissions. In other words, the clean energy generated would be equivalent to 260 million km travelled by an electric car and would save 15.6 million litres of diesel (4.5 Olympic swimming pools).
In this way, the new project of wind energy in Spain will enable the archipelago to move towards energy autonomy without depending on third parties, with a guaranteed supply of green, emission-free local energy.
During its construction, it is expected to directly employ 35 workers, of which 50% will be locals.
For Miguel Serrano, head of Iberdrola Renovables in the Canary Islands, "this wind farm is an important milestone for the archipelago as it contributes to decarbonising the economy with local energy. In addition, this project contributes to the socio-economic development of the island within the global frameworks of emissions reduction and energy autonomy".
Coexistence with nature
Environmental and heritage actions will be another variable throughout the execution. All of them are integrated within the company's Convive Programme, with measures such as the marking and fencing of the surrounding heritage elements and the eradication, monitoring and control of invasive exotic species.
The finishes of the buildings and auxiliary facilities will be covered with materials and shades appropriate to the environment in which they are located. In addition, an archaeological survey will be carried out, as well as the collection of archaeological material on the surface.
Commitment to renewables on the island
In Tenerife, Iberdrola España has been operating the Chimiche wind farm since 2019. This wind farm has been developed with a group of small local entrepreneurs, and has a capacity of 18.3 megawatts (MW). It currently supplies clean energy to a population equivalent to 15,000 homes – preventing the emission of 33,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Iberdrola España has been operating its first photovoltaic plant in the Canary Islands since 2023. With 7 MW, Llanos Pelos III, in Fuerteventura, will supply clean energy to more than 4,000 homes. The plant has received the Sustainability Seal from the Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) for all the environmental measures undertaken in the project.
