Iberdrola España has received the Storage Developer of the Year award at the second edition of the RENMAD 2024 Awards. The recognition seeks to highlight the contribution of innovative projects that are paving the way and providing certainty to the sector, and that respond to the principles of just transition while at the same time having a positive impact on society and the local economy.
Alexander Arias, Head of Special Projects at Iberdrola Renovables, accepted the award for the company's storage promotion strategy. "Storage systems are key to addressing the challenge of the energy transition and are set to become an essential element in the electricity system by improving the quality of electricity supply, ensuring the stability and reliability of the grid and integrating and harnessing the energy generated by renewable sources", said Arias.
Iberdrola España already has four operational batteries with a total of 19 MW in Spain and has just announced the installation of another six, with a capacity of 150 MW. Specifically, the projects will be built in Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia, and each battery will have 25 MW of power and a capacity of 50 MWh.
The energy company is also a leader in energy storage through pumping technology, with 4.5 GW of power installed in Spain and Portugal. The company has just received administrative authorisation for a new pumping project in Valdecañas (Cáceres), which will improve the energy potential of the Tagus River. The company also has the Alcántara II installation in the pipeline.
Among its most emblematic pumped-storage plants are La Muela, located in Valencia, which is considered the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Europe; or Támega, which, located in Portugal, is one of the largest projects built on the continent in the last 25 years.
