Iberdrola España renews the grid that supplies the Navarrese municipality of Leitza

  • i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, completes the Leitza RTS renovation project to improve supply in the Navarrese municipality and surroundings

  • The project has also made it possible to increase the quality of electricity supply and to meet future demand, ensuring a more robust and sustainable service over time

Iberdrola España, through its distributor i-DE, reaffirms its commitment to smart grids, customers and the quality of supply in Navarre. The company has completed renovation works on the Leitza substation, which distributes electricity to over 2,500 customers in and around the Navarre municipality.

The initiative is key to improving the quality and reliability of the electricity supply in an area of complex orography. In fact, this facility's capacity has increased fivefold. On the one hand, the urban and rural supply markets have been divided by splitting the Leitza Casco line, which allows for a better distribution of loads and a reduction in possible incidents; and on the other hand, the transformer has been replaced with a more powerful one. This not only improves the quality of supply, but also makes it possible to meet the expected growth in demand in the area, as well as the growing penetration of self-consumption, both individually and collectively.

A level of service quality above the national average

Iberdrola España has improved the quality of service offered to its customers in Navarra, with the best year-end value in history. In Navarre, i-DE manages over 8,200 km of low and medium voltage lines and more than 1,740 km of high and very high-voltage lines. It also has 3,648 transformation centers in service and 87 substations.

In recent years, the company has undertaken an ambitious plan to digitalize its electricity grids, converting its meters and the infrastructure that supports them into smart meters, incorporating remote management, supervision and automation capabilities.

Digitalising the electricity distribution network will provide more information to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures, in a way that is committed to ambitious and urgent climate action. The deployment of smart grids makes it possible to respond to new models of grid use and offer a better service to citizens.
