Iberdrola España facilitates self-consumption of renewables to nearly 6,760 private facilities connected to its grid

  • Installed capacity exceeds 43 MW of generation

Iberdrola España, through its distributor i-DE, already has nearly 6,760 self-consumption facilities connected to the grid in Extremadura, which generate clean energy for individuals in their own homes by installing solar panels.

These connected self-consumption facilities represent an installed capacity of 43.14 megawatts (MW) of generation, integrated into the low and medium voltage grids. This enables CO2 emissions to be reduced, as it is a green energy generation.

Iberdrola España is proactively supporting access to self-consumption as a source of clean energy generation, and leading self-consumption in Spain – with close to 220,000 customers connected to Iberdrola España's grid.

In addition to promoting renewables, this initiative also enables savings on electricity bills, given that part of the consumption is covered by the energy generated by the self-consumption system and is connected to Iberdrola España’s grid, without tolls or charges.

In this regard, i-DE published a specific guide to help to better understand the connection processes of self-consumption facilities that allow any person or company to produce and consume their own electricity by installing photovoltaic solar panels or other renewable generation systems in their home, premises or community of neighbours.

Electricity grids are essential to enable the energy transition, as they are the bridge between renewable energy generation and the consumer, be it an individual or a company. With the new self-consumption habits, the grid needs to be bi-directional.

12,600 km of power lines in Extremadura

In Extremadura, i-DE manages more than 12,600 km of power lines, has 3,432 transformer stations in service and 65 substations. The Company maintains an optimum level of service quality for customers in the region.

In addition, the digitisation of the electricity distribution grid will provide more information to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures. The smart grid makes it possible to respond to new models of grid use and offer a better service to citizens.

Accelerating investments for the energy transition

The Company has pledged to invest €6 billion between 2024-2025 in Spain to promote the electrification of the economy, with the advent of new energy demand uses. For Iberdrola España, electrification is boosting due to the need to increase energy self-sufficiency, decarbonisation, efficiency and competitiveness of companies.

Investments will be focused on the development of more grids to connect industry and new customers, in addition to customers who begin their decarbonisation processes by electrifying their production processes, and on the selective development of renewables. Iberdrola España continues to advance in its commitment to energy self-sufficiency and in its proactive role as an active agent in the fight against climate change. In fact, as part of the Strategic Plan, the Company aims to make its growth in renewables and grids compatible with the goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2030 for the emissions in our generation plants and own consumption, as well as in all our operations by 2040.
