Iberdrola España and EROSKI sign an agreement to install 1,000 charging points for Electric Vehicles
-
They will be located in car parks, petrol stations and EROSKI work centres in 11 autonomous communities (administrative regions in Spain)
-
All these points are powered by 100% green energy, coming from renewable sources with a Guarantee of Origin (GoOs) certification
Iberdrola España and EROSKI have reached an agreement to install 1,000 charging points of different power ratings for electric vehicles at around 300 of the distribution group's sites in 11 autonomous communities over the next three years.
The new facilities will be powered by 100 % green energy from renewable sources with Guarantee of Origin (GoO) certification and will save 30,000 tonnes of CO2 per year − which will have a positive impact on air quality similar to that of 1.5 million trees.
With this infrastructure, users will be able to charge their car batteries while shopping, with a variety of charger powers that will allow them to charge 100 km from 6 minutes to 45 minutes.
The 1,000 charging points will be installed in car parks, petrol stations and EROSKI work centres in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Navarre and the Basque Country.
In the first phase of this project, priority will be given to the installation of charging points at EROSKI petrol stations. All of them will be available on Iberdrola Public Charging App, the most highly rated app in the sector, where the user can view and geolocate verified information on all chargers, check their operation in real time and book and pay from a mobile phone.
With this initiative, Iberdrola España continues to accelerate its mobility transition strategy towards an emission-free system and its sustainable mobility plan. This pioneering initiative was launched in 2016 and the Company plans to install 100,000 electric chargers by 2025 in homes, businesses and on public roads. To this end, its public infrastructure design is being developed on highways and corridors as well as in cities and small towns – with the aim of having at least one fast charging station every 50 km or less.
Through this agreement, the EROSKI group is moving towards its commitment to comprehensive sustainability in developing its activity and reducing its carbon footprint, contributing to the promotion of electric vehicles in its supermarkets' network.
"This agreement reinforces Iberdrola España's sustainable mobility strategy and demonstrates the need for collaboration of all the agents involved in the path towards decarbonisation and the improvement of air quality in our cities and municipalities. The EROSKI group is a clear ally in advancing the implementation of charging points in places where users go on a daily basis so that they can charge while shopping or while working", explained the Director of Iberdrola Clientes España, David Martínez.
"Through this agreement with Iberdrola España, we will contribute to creating a quality EV charging network, thus expanding our services available to consumers. Over 300 of our facilities, which meet the regulatory requirements, will incorporate these charging points and will bring electric mobility even closer to the people. We are thus taking another step forward in our commitment to carbon neutrality and our policy of sustainable mobility and respect for the environment", said EROSKI's Development Director, Javier España.
Committed to the fight against climate change
The EROSKI group is strongly committed to respecting the environment, and to this end, carries out different actions focused on improving its products, processes and raising awareness among consumers and workers. The group has therefore redoubled its efforts in the area of sustainability and one of the most important milestones is its ambitious commitment to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This challenge is framed by the EU Code of Conduct on Responsible Food Business and Marketing Practices.
EROSKI has achieved two Lean & Green stars for having reached the objective of reducing its CO2 emissions by 30% in logistics and transport processes over the last four years. The group has also reduced its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by over 40% since 2017, has added new ecological products to its range, which now makes over 1,400 references, has incorporated the animal welfare seal to all its white meats, has continued to reduce plastic and to improve the recyclability of its packaging, with more than 180 eco-design references. Two years ago, EROSKI became the first distribution company in Spain to introduce the new Planet Score environmental labelling and last year its shops increased the number of food and fresh products marked with this seal to thirty.
Furthermore, last year, EROSKI obtained Leed Gold certification for its sustainable Lakua-Arriaga shop in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a seal that certifies sustainable buildings built under eco-efficiency standards. This is the most sustainable supermarket in its entire commercial network and marks the new energy model for its shops.
Leading the way in sustainable mobility
Iberdrola España, a leader in charging infrastructure − with a network of over 50,000 charging points in operation, of which 6,500 are public − promotes sustainable mobility as part of its strategy to drive the energy transition.
Aware that the decarbonisation of mobility − a sector responsible for 25% of CO2 emissions − is key to fighting against climate change, the Company promotes electromobility through coordinated and effective action with the main players involved. Iberdrola España therefore continues to identify opportunities to create an industrial, commercial and innovation ecosystem to consolidate the development of sustainable mobility.
As a global energy leader in renewables, it is a strategic partner for corporations and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. The Group covers the entire lifecycle of the decarbonisation process so that its commercial and industrial customers meet their environmental objectives and become the main drivers and players in the energy transition. The Group has already completed more than 100 agreements for infrastructure deployment with administrations, institutions, companies, service stations, car dealerships and vehicle manufacturers.
The energy Company facilitates any of the options necessary for each customer to achieve their decarbonisation objectives. From the supply of 100% green energy through PPAs to services such as electric mobility, self-consumption or heat pumps, to the electrification of industrial processes or the use of green hydrogen.
