More than a hundred Iberdrola España volunteers in Castilla y León will be involved in various charity initiatives related to the environment, climate change, the development and inclusion of vulnerable groups and social assistance during the company's International Volunteer Week, which starts today and runs until 6 October, united under the slogan "I make a better world".
Nearly 25% of the Iberdrola Group's workforce participates annually in the charitable actions organised by the company within the framework of its Volunteering Programme. Since it was launched in 2006, close to 13 million people have benefited from the actions promoted by the company in 24 different countries.
In the last year alone, there was a 21.5% increase in the number of volunteers, reaching more than 20,000 people, who have invested more than 90,000 hours of work in close to 1,000 activities promoted by Iberdrola Group.
Charity initiatives in Castilla y León
In Valladolid, with the help of the Environmental Association La Olma, volunteers accompanied by young people from the Red Cross Youth carried out an environmental intervention in a river ecosystem where they learned a little more about the Canal of Castile, its plants and birds, and helped protect its biodiversity, adapting the space, setting up nesting boxes for insects and planting species for pollinators.
Another of the charity initiatives took place in the Coto Escolar de León. This 120,000 m2 area, which was abandoned and used as a rubbish dump, is now a park with animals, forest, fruit trees, gardens, meadows, a vegetable garden, greenhouses, etc. where Iberdrola España volunteers planted 150 specimens of stone pine and Aleppo pine, and built huts for wildlife.
In the capital of Soria, an environmental day will be held next weekend to build grow tables with people with intellectual disabilities, ending with the planting of various species for people with disabilities to take care of later.
Iberdrola España will also carry out other charity initiatives such as a paddle tennis tournament whose winner will be given a cheque that will be donated to a local social organisation for people with disabilities to help promote adapted sports.
Pioneering, diverse and global volunteering
Iberdrola Group is celebrating its 13th International Volunteer Week between 28 September and 6 October 2024 with the slogan "I make a better world". Numerous activities related to the environment will be organised in addition to community activities. All the countries where the company is present are participating in this initiative: from Spain to Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Portugal to Japan.
Every year, employees can participate in International Volunteer Week through face-to-face or online activities. Volunteers and their families carry out various actions with other groups, such as people with disabilities, young people, women in vulnerable situations, refugees, vulnerable children and the elderly.
One of the most important solidarity initiatives is the "Dorsal Solidario" project, a global challenge to help families in need. It involves a walking, running or cycling race to encourage physical activity among participants, as well as nurturing the spirit of companionship among our employees. Every five kilometres running or walking and every 15 kilometres cycled is converted into a food basket that benefits more than 8,800 people.
