Promoted by Iberdrola España, the green tide against cancer takes to the streets of Murcia

Iberdrola España once again supports the charity walk 'Murcia Walks Against Cancer’, which had more than 3,600 participants
All proceeds will go to research being carried out by Alejandro Rodríguez at the BIO-HPC group at UCAM Catholic University of Murcia
This morning the streets of Murcia hosted the 9th edition of the charity walk in which more than 3,600 participants walked through the downtown of the capital to raise funds for cancer research and which has the support of Iberdrola España.
The event was attended by Juan José Pedreño, Minister of Health of the Region of Murcia, Pilar Torres, Councillor for Social Welfare, Family and Health of the City Council of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cerdán, Institutional Representative for Iberdrola España in the Region of Murcia, Manuel Molina Boix, President of the Spanish Cancer Association in the Region of Murcia, and Alejandro Rodríguez, BIO-HPC researcher, among others.
'Murcia Walks against Cancer’ started at the Puente de Hierro, next to Ronda Garay, with a certified five-kilometre route. The 5K and 10K runners set off at the same time, running one and two laps respectively. Walkers set off later, doing just one lap.
Support from Iberdrola España
The initiative was supported by Iberdrola España as the main partner for the 9th consecutive year and is part of the agreement between the two organisations to work both on research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to raise awareness in society in the fight against the disease.
The company and the Spanish Cancer Association have a long-standing relationship that was consolidated in 2015 with the signing of a partnership agreement aimed at cancer research. The continued commitment of the company and its customers has made Iberdrola España the association’s main private partner.
Among the most innovative initiatives within the framework of this agreement is Together Against Cancer, a project through which Iberdrola España offers its customers the possibility of collaborating with the association by matching the amount that they donate monthly through their electricity or gas bill.
Research grants
Alejandro Rodríguez is a pre-doctoral researcher in the Structural Bioinformatics and High Performance Computing Research Group (BIO-HPC) at the San Antonio de Murcia Catholic University (UCAM).
His research aims to find new anti-cancer agents, as current treatments are not sufficiently effective. Techniques based on computational chemistry have emerged in the last two decades that speed up the drug discovery process, making it faster and more affordable.
His research develops and uses advanced computational techniques to discover new drugs to fight cancer more effectively. They focus on several types of cancer, such as colorectal, pancreatic and breast. They use artificial intelligence and other innovative computational technologies to identify new drugs. The most promising drugs identified by these techniques will be tested in the lab to assess their effectiveness and how much they improve treatment for these cancers.
