Iberdrola España commissions the first electric car charging solution for resident car parks in Madrid
- The energy company has deployed the charging infrastructure in the SerranoPark residents' car park, the largest in Madrid.
- The installation allows residents to charge their electric cars individually in their resident's parking space.
Iberdrola España continues to work on the deployment of charging infrastructure, smoothing the transition to electric mobility for residents who have a parking space in the car park on Calle Serrano in Madrid. Managed by the company SerranoPark, this is the largest residents' car park in Madrid, with approximately 2,400 spaces for residents holding a permit given by the Madrid City Council.
The installation has an electrical power of 750 kW, equivalent to 200 homes, which will allow the first 300 residents who make the switch to electric vehicles to recharge. To ensure and maximise charging, an algorithm intelligently and dynamically distributes the power among the cars that are charging at any given time.
It is not technically feasible to have an electricity outlet for each parking space in residents' car parks, so the solution is to have collective infrastructure such as the one at Serrano. Having a recharging point in a residents' garage is more expensive than at a home garage, as well as entailing additional technical requirements that are difficult for a private individual to meet.
With the aim of facilitating the transition to electric mobility and the decarbonisation of the industry, Iberdrola España has assumed the additional cost so that the price is the same as what a user would pay to install a charger at home, and has managed and made the investment to provide the necessary electrical power to the car park.
The Madrid City Council has 300 car parks for residents with 100,000 parking spaces. These parking spaces are a common alternative for anyone living in a building without a parking space, and especially in areas of the city centre where private parking is scarce.
Many of these car parks, and in particular the Serrano Park, are located in low-emission zones where drivers are making the switch to electric mobility to replace combustion vehicles.
Boosting mobility
Iberdrola España has charging solutions for all transportation types. In the private sector, it has more than 40,000 charging points between its home network, with the most competitive rates in the industry (1,000 km for €5), and its network of companies, where it offers turnkey products from charging point design, installation, maintenance and management.
With more than 8,000 operational points, Iberdrola España's public recharging network is the most extensive in Spain. Its public infrastructure has been rolled out both on highways and corridors and in cities and small towns with the goal of having at least one fast charging station every 50 km or less.
The mobility plan, launched by the company in 2016, was a pioneer in its implementation. Today, the energy company's strategy envisages the installation of more than 100,000 charging points by 2025, including public, residential, company and car park charging points.
