Iberdrola España takes the light of Christmas to villages in Cantabria

  • These Cantabrian villages, located in Campoo de Yuso next to the Ebro reservoir, have been chosen this year to star in the company's Christmas lights.
  • The initiative is part of Iberdrola's commitment to the rural world and to bringing the light of Christmas to every corner of the world, not just the big cities.

Iberdrola España continues its commitment to the rural world and this Christmas is doing so in the Cantabrian towns of La Costana and Corconte, where their inhabitants have been the protagonists of the traditional Christmas lighting ceremony of emblematic Spanish villages. These municipalities, located in a spectacular natural setting in Campo de Yuso near the Ebro reservoir were chosen by the company to fill their streets with light and create an audio-visual Christmas greeting to send their best wishes for the holiday season and the New Year.

The video is an example of Iberdrola's efforts to combine nature, history and Christmas, represented by the excited faces of the residents of Cantabria, young and old, at the time of the lighting. As part of its commitment to sustainable energy, Iberdrola has also decorated the streets of both towns in Cantabria with a nativity scene in lights, a Christmas star, lit-up reindeer and greeting signs with LED lights.

I-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, also participated in this initiative, as it is responsible for looking after and maintaining the power lines and guaranteeing power supply 365 days a year. On this occasion, a brigade from Villarcayo in Burgos came to switch on the Christmas lights.

With this initiative, Iberdrola España wants to bring the magic of light to every corner of Spain, because Christmas is for everyone, not just the big cities. Iberdrola has been carrying out these lighting ceremonies in emblematic Spanish villages for five years now, a tradition that started in Montenegro de Cameros (in Soria), Manzanal del Barco, Carbellino and Villar del Buey (Zamora), Lois (León) and Fuentes de Peñacorada (León).

Iberdrola España in Cantabria

Iberdrola España is strengthening its commitment to Cantabria, as evidenced by the more than €85 M in economic impact generated by the company's business in the autonomous community in 2023, including investments, salaries, tax contributions and payments to suppliers.

Iberdrola has some 15 suppliers in the region from which it has made purchases worth €37 M, including well-known companies such as Construcciones Rotella and Reinosa Forgings and Castings, contributing to the strength of the region and the creation of industrial and innovation opportunities in a growing market with a high export component. These collaborations represent an opportunity to develop the value chain in Cantabria and to position Spanish industry as an international benchmark.

Cantabria will continue to be one of the main scenarios for Iberdrola's commitment. Through the company Biocantaber (together with Ocyener and Banco Santander), the company is working on the El Escudo wind farm in the region, which will produce 453,600 MWh, supply 49,000 homes annually, prevent the emission of 113,400 tonnes of CO2/year and involves an investment of €110 M. In Cantabria, Iberdrola has the first and only wind farm in the region, the Cañoneras wind farm in Soba, built 15 years ago, which meets a demand for 100% clean energy equivalent to 14,000 homes. The Cañoneras wind farm is an example of the use of this energy while respecting environmental values.

Commitment to the rural world

Iberdrola España is committed to supporting the rural world and to this end is developing numerous initiatives, including the Convive Awards. These awards recognise the best initiatives related to environmental, agricultural and social coexistence with clean energies, highlighting projects that exemplify the advantages of the energy transition for the rural community and its positive impact on job creation and development.

These awards have two goals: to promote continuous improvement and best available practices in the integration of renewables, electricity grids and energy storage and to make a positive contribution to local development and the conservation of biodiversity through collaboration and the establishment of partnerships.

These actions help to establish long-term relationships with the environment, maximising the positive impact of each Iberdrola España project and contributing to mutual understanding by working hand in hand with the public, institutions, government and NGOs at all times.

The Executive Chairman of Iberdrola Group, Ignacio Galán, highlighted the benefits of green energy for rural areas. "We advocate for strengthening industry, creating jobs and driving the future to create a fairer, more fraternal and sustainable society".

"Iberdrola has a spirit of service that guides, from the outset, all the projects we undertake, from the largest to the smallest. We know that harmony with local administrations and the communities in which we are present is essential to achieve more objectives and make this energy transition more tangible and fair", added Galan.
