bp and Iberdrola choose Toledo-based Imefy to supply the main transformer for their green hydrogen plant
- The 25 MW renewable hydrogen plant is the largest in Spain and will be located at the bp refinery in Castellón
- Castellón Green Hydrogen, a company owned by bp and Iberdrola, will invest more than €70 M in the entire project
- The project has received funding equivalent to €15 M from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funds to be allocated by NextGenerationEU
bp and Iberdrola have awarded the Toledo-based company Imefy the contract to manufacture and supply the transformer for the largest renewable hydrogen production plant in Spain (25 MW), which will be located at the bp refinery in Castellón.
Imefy, headquartered in Los Yébenes, a municipality located in the province of Toledo, will manufacture, supply and supervise the assembly and commissioning of the three-phase power transformer, with 37 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of power and a 66/30 kilovolts (kV) transformation ratio, and will be supplied in the first quarter of 2026.
This award demonstrates bp and Iberdrola’s confidence, through the company created for the Castellón Green Hydrogen project, in Spanish companies in the development of the renewable hydrogen value chain, contributing to the integration of the territory and the creation of industrial and innovation opportunities in a growing market, acting as a lever for development.
The project is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026 with an investment of more than €70M. In later phases of the project, the green hydrogen produced could also be used in key industries that are difficult to decarbonise in the Valencian Community, such as ceramics, to replace the natural gas used in their processes, in chemical industries and in heavy transport.
Largest green hydrogen plant in Spain
The Castellón green hydrogen plant jointly promoted by Iberdrola España and bp will be the largest in Spain. Its 25 MW electrolyser will be powered by renewable electricity through a power purchase agreement signed with Iberdrola España, which will supply 200GWh/year from Iberdrola España's photovoltaic and wind projects.
Green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis fuelled by renewable electricity will meet the European requirements for producing green hydrogen (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin, RFNBO) and support the transition of the bp refinery in Castellón to an integrated energy centre.
It is expected that 2,800 tonnes a year of green hydrogen could replace part of the grey hydrogen currently used by the bp refinery in Castellón - currently produced from natural gas – and is expected to prevent the emission of 23,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, equivalent to the emissions of 5,000 cars in the same time period.
The plant has an equivalent funding of €15 M from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan's Innovative Value Chain and Renewable Hydrogen Knowledge support programmes, with funds to be allocated by the European Union's NextGenerationEU.
