The Iberdrola Group and Amazon further expand their global renewable energy partnership in Spain

  • The Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España is part, and Amazon have extended their strategic partnership, signed in 2022 for renewable energy PPAs and cloud services allowing more workloads to be migrated to the AWS Spain Region

The Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España forms part, and Amazon have extended their strategic partnership, originally signed in 2022 for renewable energy PPAs (power purchase agreements) and cloud services, with the new agreement enabling both parties to collaborate on additional projects in existing and new markets.

The new power purchase agreements include Amazon's first PPA in Portugal for 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the largest wind farm in Portygal, scheduled to begin construction in early 2025. The partnership also expanded into Spain, with two utility scale PPAs agreed for a total of 257 MW of solar and wind energy. The three projects are equivalent to 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity per year, enough to power the equivalent of around 300,000 homes per year.

In Spain, the new PPA agreements include:

  • Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant (Salamanca): Amazon will purchase 212 MW of capacity at the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca to supply the equivalent of 150,000 homes per year. With an investment of close to €200 million euros by Iberdrola España, more than 800 jobs will be created during peak construction periods. As part of the project, the company has made a commitment Ciudad Rodrigo municipality to support restoration of the Plaza Amayuelas town square to make it once again a space for the whole community to enjoy.
  • Valdemoro wind farm (Burgos): Additionally, the output from 45 MW from the Valdemoro wind farm located in the province of Burgos, will be purchased by Amazon. With an installed capacity of 49.5 MW, capable of supplying the equivalent of 48,000 homes, the project is made up of eleven wind turbines, with a height of 107.5 meters and a rotor diameter of 145 meters. During peak construction the project will support 145 jobs, around 40% will be drawn from local contractors.
