Iberdrola España, the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation -Frah- and the Regional Government of Castilla y León have launched a new environmental education programme "EcoHeroes in Action", which will involve 10 schools in the province and more than 300 secondary school students from Zamora in order to invite them to become the heroes that the planet needs.
Planet Earth is suffering from environmental degradation and is at a point of no return. Due to pollution, the use of fossil fuels and non-renewable resources, and climate change, life is at risk and today's leaders have issued a call for help to the new generations. Faced with this urgent situation, students have a new challenge, to design and build a new sustainable and safe home where everyone can live in harmony with the environment, helping them to discover how important it is to take care of the planet.
Through models made from recycled materials, the young people will create a living space where energy is obtained from clean sources such as the sun, wind and water, they will learn about sustainability, the importance of renewable energies, and they will get their creativity going by reusing materials.
This initiative aims to raise awareness and educate young people through an activity that allows them to reflect and acquire critical awareness.
"This is a new motivational proposal that we will carry out in our facilities, in a natural environment, in order to convey the importance of youth participation in the climate challenge," said José Luis Gonzalez Prada, director of the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation.
For his part, Miguel Calvo, Iberdrola España's delegate in Castilla y León, pointed out that, on its way to continue building a greener world, with renewable energies that protect and improve the quality of life of people and the planet, "today the Iberdrola Group remains at the forefront of the green revolution facing the world's major economies. It does so with a clear motivation: 'For you. For the planet'. A motto that is the backbone of the energy company's day-to-day activity towards more sustainable models."
"The training and awareness of young people from an early age in environmental values to stop the deterioration of the planet is a task for everyone, so environmental education programmes such as this one with Iberdrola and the FRAH, are a point of reflection for schoolchildren participating in this edition," said the regional delegate of the Junta, Fernando Prada.
This educational tool is part of the materials developed within the framework of the "Change is in your hands" project that both entities launched in 2022, addressing the transition towards a greener energy model and the modification of consumption habits that help to decarbonise the planet and reduce CO2 emissions.
