Iberdrola España, the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation -Frah- and the Regional Government of Castile and León have launched a new environmental education programme ‘EcoHeroes in Action’, which will involve 10 schools in the province and more than 300 secondary school students from Zamora to invite them to become the heroes that the planet needs.

Planet Earth is suffering from environmental degradation and is at a point of no return. Pollution, the use of fossil fuels and non-renewable resources, and climate change, life is at risk and today's leaders have issued a call for help to the new generations. Faced with this urgent situation, students have a new challenge, to design and build a new sustainable and safe home where everyone can live in harmony with the environment, helping them to discover how important it is to conserve the planet.

Through models made from recycled materials, the young people will create a living space where energy is obtained from clean sources such as the sun, wind and water, they will learn about sustainability, the importance of renewable and they will activate their creativity going by reusing materials.

This initiative aims to raise awareness and educate kids through an activity that gets them to think and gain critical awareness.

‘This is a new motivational proposition that we will carry out in our facilities, in nature, to convey the importance of youth participation in the climate challenge,’ said José Luis Gonzalez Prada, director of the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation.

Miguel Calvo, Iberdrola España's representative in Castile and León, pointed out that on its way to continue building a greener world with renewable energies that protect and improve the quality of life of people and the planet, ‘today the Iberdrola Group is at the forefront of the green revolution facing the world's major economies. It does so with a clear motivation: “For you. For the planet”. A motto that is the backbone of the energy company's everyday business moving towards more sustainable models’.

‘Training and educating young people from an early age in environmental values to stop harm to the planet is a task for everyone, so environmental education programmes such as this one with Iberdrola and the FRAH, are crucial for participating schoolchildren,’ said the regional representative of the Regional Government, Fernando Prada.

This educational tool is part of the materials developed within the framework of the ‘Change is in your hands’ project that both organisations launched in 2022, addressing the transition towards a greener energy model and the modification of consumption habits that help to decarbonise the planet and reduce CO2 emissions

The professionals of the future

The company's business model, after anticipating the energy transition, by 20 years, makes it a key driving force in the transformation of the industrial fabric, using its experience, social responsibility and financial capacity to promote a long-term sustainable economic growth model capable of meeting the challenges facing society today.

Likewise, as part of its commitment to the regions in which it operates, it supports training and knowledge exchange, which contributes to bringing up a generation of professionals with the very best skills to face the challenges of the future, including the development of a sustainable energy model.
