Iberdrola España and ANFAC join forces to drive electric mobility in Spain

  • The two organisations see their partnership as key to addressing the opportunities and challenges of emission-free mobility.

  • Electrification of road transport is a step towards energy independence and will drive the country’s economy

Electric mobility is one of the cornerstones of achieving decarbonisation objectives by 2050, so ANFAC (the Spanish Association of Car and Truck Manufacturers) and Iberdrola España ( leader in electric charging infrastructure in Spain) are joining forces to promote its implementation in Spain, the only emissions-free option at present, which also allows moving closer to energy independence.

Both organisations consider their partnership to be key to better promote the sale of electrified vehicles more strongly, to definitively drive the development of public access charging infrastructure and to advocate for the implementation of effective public policies and incentives to meet the objectives set by Europe and established by the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).

Electric mobility not only helps cut back on emissions and improve air quality in cities, it also drives the country’s economy both in vehicle manufacture and the construction of charging stations. These areas help to create jobs and promote innovation and the development of new tech in mobility and renewable energy sectors.

Spain is the second largest car producer in Europe, with 18 factories manufacturing 27 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles out of a total of 40 models. However, the country is progressing slowly in the penetration of electrified vehicles, with an 11% market share in the last year, compared to the European average of 20%. With more than 8,400 recharging points with a 100% renewable energy guarantee in operation in Spain and 4,000 more in different phases of installation or activation, it is the leading infrastructure operator. ANFAC, the main representative of the automotive sector in Spain, with more than 60 associated brands, makes them key partners in facing the challenges and opportunities posed by the electrification of mobility

The partnership between ANFAC and Iberdrola España is a significant step towards a more sustainable and cleaner future in Spain. By joining forces, the entities are laying the foundations for a successful transition to electric mobility, benefiting both the environment and the economy. With the right public policy support and consumers’ active participation, Spain can become a leader in electric mobility in Europe.

‘Electrification is unstoppable and electric mobility is here to stay. The electric car represents not only an opportunity for the Spanish automotive industry, but also the reduction of our dependence on fossil fuels and their emissions. It also has multiple benefits for the end user, such as fuel savings, less noise and greater comfort. The signing of this agreement between Iberdrola España and the Spanish Association of Car and Truck Manufacturers, ANFAC, represents the partnership between the main car manufacturers and the leader in public and private charging infrastructure in Spain’, says Mario Ruíz-Tagle, CEO of Iberdrola España.

‘The foundations of the sector are based on new value chains, where new emerging players are taking the lead. In this context, energy has become an axis around which the core of the industry's strategic decisions pivot. The synergies between the energy and automotive industries are stronger than ever, and this translates not only into technology, but also into business opportunities and value-added services. Advancing hand in hand with Iberdrola España in this transition allows us decarbonise to the entire value chain, from manufacturing to end use. The partnership between energy and electric cars is natural and necessary’, says ANFAC President Josep María Recasens.
