Palencia will have its second Iberdrola España solar community

  • The new installation, the first in the capital and the tenth to be marketed by the company in Castilla and León, will be located on the roof ofthe Santa Rita school and will prevent the release of around 938 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years
  • In addition to reducing the cost of the school's electricity bill, residents within a radius of 2 kilometres will be able to benefit from the advantages of renewable self-consumption, without the need for their own infrastructure or investment
  • This initiative reflects both organisations’ commitment to sustainability and the energy transition

Iberdrola España and the Santa Rita school join forces to promote a pioneering solar community in Palencia in its commitment to sustainability and energy transition.

The new installation, the first to be marketed by Iberdrola España in the capital, the second in the province and the tenth in Castilla y León, will be located on the roof of this educational center and will prevent the release of around 938 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.

In addition to reducing the cost of the school's electricity bill, neighbors within a radius of 2 kilometers will be able to benefit from the advantages of renewable self-consumption, without the need for their own infrastructure or investments.

This form of community self-consumption allows users to share the 100% renewable energy generated from a single photovoltaic installation located in the vicinity of their home, in this case on the roof of the Santa Rita school.

Iberdrola España is investing in this installation which will consist of 255 solar panels, the total power will reach 117 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce about 170 megawatt hours (MWh) annually.

Around 208 families will be able to participate in this solar community and save on their electricity bills by consuming part of the energy produced locally by this installation. This pioneering school will also be able to cover up to 30% of its electricity consumption.

In addition, as a result of its commitment to self-consumption, Iberdrola España has improved the remuneration of its customers' surpluses and, thanks to innovation in energy products, self-consumers with Iberdrola España plans are able to price their surpluses over the energy term or gas price, making it possible to have a zero euro bill.

“This pioneering initiative is a very important milestone that marks Iberdrola España's commitment to innovation in energy solutions, sustainability and commitment to the places we do businesss by making self-consumption available, in this case, to 208 families in the capital of Palencia,” says Celiano García, Commercial Director of Iberdrola España in Castilla and León.

For her part, the headmistress of Santa Rita School, Sister Sonia, stresses that ‘this decision is not only a step forward in terms of environmental responsibility, but also has significant benefits for our educational community’. She also pointed out that an installation as important as the one that is going to be set up will ‘help to encourage our pupils’ interest in renewable energies and is in line with the school's commitment to making environmentally responsible pupils’.

Leader in self-consumption

As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, Iberdrola España not only promotes photovoltaic self-consumption, encouraging it to be fed into the energy system through its grids, but also leads the customer management market of this type of system in Spain.

The group self-consumption solutions developed by Iberdrola España have made self-consumption available to any customer, whether or not they have their own roof. Customers in this segment also benefit from the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity tariff during the times when there is no sun, which is when they need to use energy from the grid, since during the day they supply themselves from their own installation.

Self-consumption solar systems can save 30% on annual bills in the case of apartment buildings, 50% for companies and businesses, and up to 70% in single-family homes. These savings come about in three ways: the energy produced by the installation that the user doesn’t have to buy, the compensation for surplus energy not consumed that is fed into the grid and savings due to lower taxes.

Iberdrola España's customers can use the Solar Cloud service, which allows them to offset surpluses over the energy term, even diverting them for consumption at another residence.
