Iberdrola España recognised at the RENMAD Almacenamiento Awards for its leadership in innovation
- The company was recognised in two categories, ‘Storage Project of the Year’ and ‘Energy Storage Personality of the Year’, which went to Fernando Perán, Head of pumped storage projects on the Tagus River
- Last year, the company received the Energy Storage Promoter of the Year award

Iberdrola España was one of the main protagonists of the 2025 RENMAD Almacenamiento Awards, receiving two awards in recognition of its leadership in the development of energy storage solutions that accelerate the energy transition and reinforce the sustainability of the electricity system.
The ‘Storage Project of the Year’ award recognises the most emblematic initiative in the industry in terms of impact, scalability and added value for the electricity system. Iberdrola España has been distinguished for the reversible pumping system in Torrejón-Valdecañas, a key infrastructure for the massive storage of renewable energy and to guarantee the stability of electricity supply.
‘The Valdecañas project is a great example of how we can integrate battery operation with fast grid responses in a single plant. With the hydroelectric power plant our response might be slower but we have a much greater energy capacity’, commented Fernando Perán, pumped storage project head on the Tagus River, in relation to the Extremadura project.
The Torrejón-Valdecañas facilities have a total capacity of 290 MW and include a hybridised battery in Valdecañas with 15 MW and 7.5 MWh of stored energy. Both infrastructures are key to guaranteeing the flexibility of the electricity system, improving the integration of renewables and making progress in the decarbonisation of our energy mix.
Fernando Perán, storage personality of the year
In the ‘Storage Personality’ category, RENMAD 2025 honoured Fernando Perán Montero, a professional whose career has been decisive in the development of energy storage in Spain. His technical and strategic leadership in the deployment of innovative solutions at the company, as well as his key role in the industry’s evolution, were praised by the jury.
These awards reinforce Iberdrola España's commitment to innovation, technological development and talent as the cornerstones of a more sustainable, efficient and decarbonised future energy system.
Iberdrola España currently has 18 pumped-storage hydroelectric plants with a total installed capacity of 6,000 MW, making it the leader in this technology in Spain and one of the European benchmarks.
