WOMEN'S FOOTBALL IN SPAIN
Iberdrola Spain, a driving force for women's football
At Iberdrola Spain, we promote women's equality through women's football. Sponsors of the Spanish league since 2016, we are the main promoter of this sport in Spain. We promote the Spanish women's national team, as well as the U-19 and U-17 teams, and we count on the key role of important players, such as Alexia Putellas and Irene Paredes, to continue paving the way for women's football to finally get the recognition it deserves.
berdrola Spain has been supporting women's football for years by sponsoring the Spanish football league.
Specifically, since 2016, we have been the sponsors of the main club competition, which was given the name Primera Iberdrola until 2022. In recent years, the league has been played in several first division stadiums and with much wider television coverage. Currently, we are also sponsors of the Copa de la Reina (Queen’s Cup) and the Supercopa (Super Cup), which is played by the winning team of the league against the winning team of the cup.
We are also the main sponsor of the national team and youth categories. Thanks to our support, the work carried out over the last few years in Spain has had an impact on the women's youth categories of the Spanish national team, winning the world championships in the U-20 and U-17 categories, as well as the European triumph in the U-19 category.
The Spanish national team and the World Championships
With the senior national team, Spain has played in four European Championships and two World Cups, their best qualification being a place in the semi-finals until 2023. In 2023, Spain once again took part in the Women's World Cup, which will be played between 20 July and 20 August in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2004, the national team won its first European Under-19 Championship, and expectations were high to reach the first-ever World Cup. But it was only in 2015 that Spain managed to qualify after beating Italy in the group stage for the first time in its history.
However, in that World Cup, Spain was eliminated in the group stage of the championship. For 2019, qualification would be much easier, not falling in a single match. At the World Cup, they reached the Round of 16 after finishing second in their group, behind only Germany. In the round of 16, they would fight against the United States, but the team would fall after a tough 1-2 defeat against the Americans.
To qualify for the 2023 World Cup, the national team had to go through the group stage where it was drawn with Scotland (also sponsored by Iberdrola Group, through its Scottish subholding Scottish Power), Ukraine, Hungary and the Faroe Islands, managing to win all the matches, without conceding a single goal and achieving an incredible 53-goal difference.
In 2023, the team became world champions after defeating England in a thrilling final, by a score of 1-0. Prior to that, Spain had finished second in the group after wins over Zambia and Costa Rica, before falling hard against Japan. However, the national team bounced back, defeating Switzerland 5-1 in the Round of 16 and then managing to eliminate Sweden in extra time and the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
To achieve good results at the World Cup, Spain must rely on the talent of one of the star players of the World Cup, Alexia Putellas. The midfielder made history by being the first Spaniard to win the Ballon d'Or and The Best in the same year - at which point she joined Iberdrola España as an ambassador for equality in sport.Enlace externo, se abre en ventana nueva. In 2022, she was crowned Ballon d'Or winner once again, becoming the first woman in history to win the prestigious award twice.
Together we make the playing field bigger for the World Cup 2023
In addition to an exclusive page to learn more about the players and the tournament, we have also carried out several actions in support of the national team, under the "Campos Ampliados" campaign. The whole of Spanish women's sport turned out to support the national team as they won their first World Cup.
