WIND FARMS IN GALICIA

More than 600 MW of wind power in Galicia from Iberdrola España to boost sustainable development in the region

Wind energy in Galicia, located on the northwest coast of Spain, has experienced significant growth in recent decades. With its extensive Atlantic coastline and mountainous topography, the region presents exceptional geographical conditions for wind power generation.

Number of wind power plants 18
Total installed capacity 626 MW

As one of the pioneering autonomous communities in regulating the use of wind to produce electricity, Galicia is also the second region that contributes the most to Spain's GDP from the wind sector and the third region that generates the most wind energy. to Spain's GDP from the wind energy sector and the third region that generates the most wind energy. Furthermore, by the end of 2021, the Galician wind energy sector employed 5,600 people . Thus, the Galician wind industry has become an important economic driver, creating jobs and attracting investment in technology and infrastructure to the area.

Iberdrola España has been operating in Galicia since 1999 . The region is Iberdrola España's fourth largest autonomous community in terms of total installed wind farm capacity and is the only company that manages more than 600 MW of wind power in the autonomous region. Its 18 facilities have a capacity of 626 MW spread across the four Galician provinces: A Coruña, Lugo, Pontevedra and Ourense. Thus, its installed capacity is capable of providing electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes.

Wind farms in A Coruña

Iberdrola España has three wind farms, with a total installed capacity of 99 MW, in A Coruña: Forgoselo (24 MW), Monte Treito (30 MW) and Pedregal (45 MW).

Forgoselo wind farm

With 20 years of history, the Forgoselo wind farm is an exceptional example of coexistence between renewable energies and the livestock and agricultural sector. The facility, located in the Fragas do Eume natural park, between the municipalities of A Capela and Sano Sadurniño, has an installed capacity of 24 MW thanks to its 37 wind turbines.

Thus, the production of energy from the Forgoselo wind farm contributes to the reduction of the emission of around 9,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

Monte Treito wind farm

The Monte Treito wind farm, located in an area bordering four municipalities in the province (Rianxo, Dodro, Lousame and Rois), was commissioned at the end of 2000. The farm is equipped with 40 wind turbines 55 metres high and has an installed capacity of 30 MW. Thus, the estimated production of wind energy avoids the emission of 78,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

Pedregal Tremuzo wind farm

Put into operation in 2003, the Pedregal Tremuzo wind farm is located at the top of Mount Tremuzo, between the municipalities of Mazaricos, Muros and Outes. Divided into Tremuzo I and Tremuzo II, it has 43 wind turbines and an installed capacity of 45 MW.

Wind farms in Lugo

In Lugo, Iberdrola España manages the wind farms of Muras (49 MW), Serra de Meira (49 MW), Serra da Panda (18 MW), Viveiro (37 MW) and Goia Peñote (40 MW), which have an installed capacity of 193 MW.

Muras wind farm

The municipality of Muras, located in the province of Lugo, has a total of 20 wind farms with more than 380 wind turbines. The town is known as the Galician municipality with the most wind farms, where Iberdrola España has two of its own facilities: Muras I and Muras II. Both wind farms have a total installed capacity of 49 MW.

Serra de Meira y Goia Peñote wind farms

Iberdrola España acquired both wind farms in 2004. The Serra de Meira wind farm, in the municipality of the same name, has 58 wind turbines and an installed capacity of 49 MW, while Goia Peñote, in Muras, has 43 wind turbines and a total capacity of 40 MW.

Wind farms in Ourense

Ourense is the Galician province where Iberdrola España operates the largest number of wind farms: Nogueira (3 MW), Vieiro (20 MW), Pena da Cruz (23 MW), Serra do Burgo (27 MW), Sil (49 MW), Sil Ampliación (40 MW) and Serra do Larouco (42 MW). The total capacity of all the facilities is 204 MW.

Vieiro wind farm

In 2007, construction began on the Vieiro wind farm, located in the municipalities of Bande and Verea. With an investment of around €21 million, this facility has a capacity of 20 MW thanks to its 19 wind turbines.

The wind farm produces around 45,000 MW annually, which avoids the emission of more than 18,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. In addition, the facility has a purifying effect equivalent to that of 1.5 million trees.

Serra do Larouco wind farm

The Serra do Larouco wind farm was commissioned in 2014 in the towns of Baltar and Ginzo de Limia, in the province of Ourense. The initial construction of the wind farm, before its expansion, involved an investment of around €25 million. The Serra do Larouco wind farm has 49 wind turbines, giving it an installed capacity of 42 MW

Pena da Cruz wind farm

The Pena da Cruz wind farm in Chandrexa de Queixa has 15 wind turbines and an installed capacity of 13 MW. Its extension, located in the same place, has added 12 wind turbines to the farm and 10 MW of capacity, reaching a total of 23 MW of installed capacity and 27 wind turbines.

Serra do Burgo wind farm

The Serra do Burgo wind farm, located in the municipalities of Montederramo and Chandrexa de Queixa (Ourense), was expanded to generate an installed capacity of 27 MW thanks to its 32 wind turbines.

Sil y Sil Ampliación wind farms

Located in the municipalities of Nogueira de Ramuín and Esgos, the Sil wind farm has undergone several expansions, divided into two stages, since its construction. With its expansion, the facility added 40 MW of power and 20 more wind turbines, reaching the figure of 70 wind turbines and a total installed power of 49 MW.

Wind farms in Pontevedra

Iberdrola España has a presence in the province of Pontevedra through three wind farms, with a total installed capacity of 131 MW: Montecarrio (31 MW), Ameixeiras-Testeiros (50 MW) and Masgalán-Campo do Coco (50 MW). Both Ameixeiras-Testeiros and Masgalán-Campo do Coco have one of the largest installed capacities in a wind farm in Galicia.
