Wind farms in Murcia
Wind energy in Murcia contributes to the socio-economic development of the region
Murcia, known for its sunny climate and diverse landscape, continues to work on boosting the presence of wind energy in the region. Its wind farms, which harness the winds blowing in from the Mediterranean Sea, have contributed not only to the generation of clean electricity, but also to creating jobs and boosting the local economy.
Wind farms in Murcia
Iberdrola España is the largest producer of renewable energy in the autonomous region, where its seven wind farms (Reventones, Gavilanes, Almendros 1 and 2, Buey and Sierra de las Cabras) have a total installed capacity of 161 MW, enough capacity to supply thousands of homes and prevent the emission of 375,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
Reventones wind farm
Inaugurated in 2007, the Reventones wind farm is located in the municipality of Jumilla and is the fourth wind farm built by Iberdrola España in the autonomous community of Murcia. The facility, which required an investment of €38 million, is equipped with 17 wind turbines and has a total installed capacity of 34 MW.
Gavilanes wind farm
The Gavilanes wind farm was inaugurated in November 2003 and is located in the municipalities of Yecla and Jumilla. Its extension, which involved an investment of €12 million, was carried out in 2007, coinciding with the construction of the Almendros I, Almendros II and Reventones wind farms.
The wind farm initially had an installed capacity of 22.5 MW. With its expansion, it now has 37.8 MW and 18 new wind turbines. The new wind turbines, which add an additional 15.3 MW to the facility, have a rated capacity of 850 kW.
Almendros I and Almendros II wind farms
The Almendros I facility, with an installed capacity of 20 MW thanks to its 12 wind turbines, and Almendros II, with 14 wind turbines producing 28 MW, have a total installed capacity of 48 MW.
Both wind farms are located in the municipality of Jumilla and their commissioning involved an investment of €28 million.
Buey wind farm
The Buey wind farm, located in the mountain range of the same name in the municipality of Jumilla, has 23 wind turbines of 850 kW each, with a total installed capacity of 19.55 MW.
This wind farm, together with the Gavilanes facility, produces electricity equivalent to the consumption of thousands of homes. In this way, the electricity generated is distributed thanks to the electricity substation located in Yecla.
Sierra de las Cabras wind farm
With an investment of €22 million, Iberdrola España built the Sierra de las Cabras wind farm in the Murcian town of Jumilla, which was commissioned at the end of 2012. The facility has 11 wind turbines, with a unit capacity of 2 MW. Thus, the wind farm has an installed capacity of 22 MW.
